Bright Future for Diesel Techs

Research shows that skilled trades, such as automotive technician, are in high demand.

In Springfield, Nick Stafford, technical recruiter at CIT Trucks, said he struggles to find qualified candidates to fill open positions for diesel technicians, a job that requires a special certification that can be earned at UTI. Diesel technicians can make $40,000 per year starting out and eventually earn six figures, he said.

"There are not enough people who attend technical schools to meet our growing technical needs," Stafford said. "We need someone who's been through training and knows how to diagnose a vehicle."

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook, the median annual wage for diesel service technicians and mechanics was $44,520 in May 2015.

In the coming years, there is expected to be a demand for at least 76,900 NEW positions for graduating diesel technicians, as 60% of technicians are expected to leave the workforce in the next 5 years.
